When the Shadows Come [Poem]

This is a small poem I wrote in the quiet hours of the afternoon a few days ago. I’m sure others can relate when they sit still, with nothing but their mind and thoughts to keep them company. This is especially true when those thoughts come from the darker recesses of our psyche.

This isn’t to say sitting still with your thoughts is a bad thing! But rather, to acknowledge when those dark thoughts come about, and remember that they are just that; thoughts and nothing more.

When dawn returns, and proceeds the night,

Bringing welcomed all-encompassing light,

Its radiance shines with no warmth in sight,

For that is when the shadows come.

Imminent minutes tick by and by,

To meandering hours that crawl and fly,

Despite day’s rest quaking mind is nigh,

For that is when the shadows come.

In bed we lay, our bodies in wait,

For mind and soul in petrified state,

Both tangible and spirit the dark brings weight,

For that is when the shadows come.

The air grows thick, the void approaching,

With tendrils hunger, its presence encroaching,

Thoughts race and collapse to self-reproaching,

For that is when the shadows come.

When dawn returns, and proceeds the night,

Bringing welcomed all-encompassing light,

Its radiance shines with no warmth in sight,

For that is when the shadows come.
